Hungary: Inflation slows in January from December
Latest reading: Consumer prices rose 2.0% in annual terms in January, following a 3.3% increase in the previous month. January’s reading was the weakest since March 2018 and hit the floor of the Central Bank’s target range of 2.0–4.0%.
Relative to the prior month’s figures, there were milder price pressures for clothing and footwear (-0.1% on a year-on-year basis vs +0.2% in December), food and non-alcoholic beverages (-2.0% vs -0.3% in December), housing and energy (+5.0% vs +6.6% in December) and transport (-3.1% vs -1.4% in December).
Meanwhile, core consumer prices rose 2.7% on a year-on-year basis in January, following a 3.8% increase in the prior month.
Lastly, consumer prices rose 0.31% in January on a month-on-month basis, following a 0.08% increase in the prior month.
