Switzerland: Retail sales fall in January
Latest reading: Retail sales declined 2.0% on a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis in January, following a 1.1% rise in the prior month. January’s reading was the weakest since July 2023.
Relative to the prior month’s data, readings in January worsened for food, beverages, and tobacco (-1.1% in seasonally adjusted month-on-month terms vs +1.6% in December) and household equipment (-3.0% vs +3.6% in December). In contrast, the reading for automotive fuel improved in January (+0.4% vs -1.0% in December).
On a calendar-adjusted year-on-year basis, retail sales were down 1.1% in January, following 2.8% growth in the prior month.
