Industrial output contracts at sharpest rate since January in September
Latest reading: Industrial output dived 10.7% in month-on-month seasonally adjusted terms in September, which contrasted August's 3.0% increase. September's result marked the worst reading since January. Looking at the details of the release, the drop was due to a plummet in the modern sector, whose output tends to be volatile due to the presence of multinational-dominated industries, such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals and computers and electronics; in contrast, the traditional sector output gained steam. On an annual basis, overall industrial production dove 5.2% in September, contrasting August’s 12.3% expansion. Meanwhile, the trend improved sizably, with the annual average variation of industrial production coming in at minus 9.3% in September, up from August's minus 11.4% reading.
