Merchandise trade surplus widens in September

Latest reading: In September, the trade balance was USD +3.7 billion, following a USD +2.7 billion figure in the prior month. Over the last 12 months, the trade balance summed to USD +28.9 billion. Exports rose 23.0% in annual terms in September, following 13.8% growth in the prior month. The increase was driven by both higher prices and greater volumes. In particular, prices rose for mining products while shipments increased for fishmeal, copper concentrates and non-traditional agricultural and fishery products. Imports were up 11.7% in annual terms in September, coming on the back of a 7.4% increase in the prior month.
