Harmonized inflation drops to lowest level in over three years in August

Latest reading: Harmonized inflation came in at 1.1% in August, down from July’s 1.4%. August's figure marked the lowest inflation rate since March 2021 and was firmly below the Euro area average of 2.2%. The reading was largely due to steeper declines in prices for housing and utilities, and transport. Annual average harmonized inflation fell to 3.4% in August (July: 3.9%). Meanwhile, consumer price inflation fell to 0.9% in August from the previous month's 1.3%. Finally, harmonized consumer prices were unchanged from the previous month in August, after July's 0.20% fall.

Panelist insight: Analysts at the EIU commented: “We expect headline inflation to remain moderate in 2024 overall, however, driven by softer energy and food-price pressures and lagged effects of tighter monetary policy, although we note upside risks from tighter oil markets and volatile climatic conditions that could affect food prices.”
