Latest reading: Economic sentiment went down to 94.8 in January, following December’s 94.9. The latest reading was below the long-term average of 100, pointing to a muted near-term outlook for the economy.
In January, sentiment darkened in the construction sector (-19.7 vs -18.4 in December) and among consumers (-18.5 vs -16.0 in December). On the flipside, sentiment turned more upbeat in the industrial sector (-12.2 vs -12.8 in December), the services sector (+14.0 vs +11.5 in December) and the retail sector (-6.6 vs -7.1 in December).
