Bulgaria: Inflation rises in May from April
Latest reading: Harmonized consumer prices rose 6.3% on a year-on-year basis in May, following a 6.0% rise in the prior month. May’s reading was the strongest since September 2023 and the highest in the euro area.
Relative to the prior month’s data, there were higher price pressures for transportation (+14.6% in annual terms vs +12.2% in April) and housing and utilities (+5.4% vs +4.7% in April). In contrast, there were reduced price pressures for food and non-alcoholic beverages (+4.0% vs +5.1% in April) and recreation (+10.4% vs +11.1% in April). Finally, the variation in restaurants and hotels prices was the same as in the prior month (+7.8% in May and April).
Meanwhile, consumer prices increased 6.9% in May, following a 6.8% rise in the prior month.
Lastly, harmonized consumer prices were up 0.32% in May in month-on-month terms, following a 1.82% increase in the previous month.
