Germany: Economic sentiment among euro area’s weakest in December
Latest reading: Economic sentiment dropped to 90.1 in December, following November’s 91.2. December’s reading was the lowest since April 2025 and among the weakest in the euro area. Consequently, the index remained below the long-term average of 100, pointing to a muted near-term outlook for the economy.
In December, sentiment darkened in the industrial sector (-20.2 vs -18.9 in November), the services sector (+3.8 vs +5.1 in November), the retail sector (-25.1 vs -23.6 in November) and among consumers (-12.0 vs -11.5 in November). In contrast, sentiment turned more upbeat in the construction sector (-11.9 vs -12.4 in November).
