Kenya: Inflation ebbs in January from the prior month
Latest reading: Consumer prices increased 4.4% in annual terms in January, following a 4.5% increase in the prior month and staying within the Central Bank’s 2.5–7.5% target range.
Relative to the previous month’s data, there were reduced price pressures for food and non-alcoholic beverages (+7.3% in annual terms vs +7.8% in December) and transportation (+4.8% vs +5.2% in December). In contrast, there were more notable price pressures for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (+2.2% vs +1.6% in December) and clothing (+2.0% vs +1.5% in December).
Finally, consumer prices increased 0.64% in January on a month-on-month basis, unchanged from the prior month’s reading.
