Spain: Retail sales contract in December
Latest reading: Retail sales fell 0.8% in working day and seasonally adjusted month-on-month terms in December, following a 1.0% increase in the prior month. December’s reading was the weakest since January 2025.
Relative to the prior month’s figures, readings in December worsened for large chain stores (-0.6% on a working day and seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis vs +2.6% in November) and small chain stores (-1.7% vs +1.5% in November). Finally, the variation in single retail stores was the same as in the prior month (-0.4% in December and November).
In annual terms, retail sales increased 2.9% in December, following a 6.0% rise in the prior month.
