Inflation moderates in February
Latest reading: Inflation dropped to 2.9% in February from January’s 3.6%, below market expectations and driven by the seasonal effect of the Lunar New Year. Looking at the details of the release, the moderation was chiefly driven by softer price pressures for food. Moreover, transport prices declined at a sharper rate. That said, housing and utilities prices rose at a faster pace. As a result, the trend pointed down, with annual average inflation edging down to 3.6% in February (January: 3.7%). Lastly, consumer prices rose 0.34% over the previous month in February, decelerating from January's 0.98% rise.
Panelist insight: Commenting on the outlook, Emerging Market Watch analysts stated: “Looking ahead, inflation is expected to rise in the coming months as both fiscal and monetary policies remain accommodative. Additionally, the government appears to have a higher tolerance for inflation in pursuit of robust economic growth. The National Assembly has approved an upward adjustment of the inflation target for this year to a range of 4.0%-4.5%.”
