Fall in consumer prices softens in March
Latest reading: Consumer prices fell 0.1% in annual terms in March, following a 0.9% decline in the prior month. March's reading was the strongest in a year. Relative to the previous month's data, there were higher price pressures for housing and utilities (-0.5% on a year-on-year basis vs -1.1% in February) and transportation and communication (0.0% vs -2.9% in February). In contrast, price pressures eased for recreation and education in March (+0.6% vs +0.9% in February). Finally, the change in food and beverages prices was the same as in the prior month (+0.3% in March and February). Meanwhile, core consumer prices increased 0.6% on a year-on-year basis in March, unchanged from the prior month's reading. Finally, consumer prices rose 0.60% in March on a month-on-month basis, following a 0.24% fall in the prior month.
