Australia: Employment falls in July
Latest reading: Employment fell by 15,800 in July 2026, bringing the total number of employed people to 14.81 million. This reversed the previous month’s upwardly revised increase of 80,300 and was weaker than the expected gain of 15,000. The decline, the first since April, was mainly attributable to a 32,200 fall in part-time employment. In contrast, full-time employment increased by 16,300, reaching a record high of 10.21 million.
Finally, the unemployment rate ticked up from 4.4% in June to 4.5% in July.
