Japan: Inflation accelerates in June from the prior month
Latest reading: Consumer prices were up 1.7% in annual terms in June, following a 1.5% increase in the previous month.
Relative to the prior month’s data, there were higher price pressures for housing (+1.0% in annual terms vs +0.9% in May), transportation (+2.4% vs +1.9% in May) and energy (-0.1% vs -2.5% in May). In contrast, price pressures reduced for food in June (+3.2% vs +3.5% in May).
Meanwhile, core consumer prices rose 1.6% in annual terms in June, following a 1.4% rise in the previous month.
Finally, consumer prices increased 0.04% in June in month-on-month terms, following a 0.46% rise in the previous month.
