Agricultural prices decreased 0.9% month on month in August, following July’s 3.7% fall.
Agricultural prices fell for the sixth consecutive month in August. Five of the nine agricultural commodities tracked by our panelists traded lower month on month than in July, pushing aggregate prices for the agricultural complex to a one-year low. Grains set the tone in August, with corn, rice, soybeans and wheat all trading lower year on year. Cotton prices also eased as U.S. protectionism weighed on purchasing activity. In contrast, prices for cocoa, coffee and palm oil rose from the prior month. Meanwhile, sugar prices largely stabilized near July’s average, with ample supply offsetting upward pressure from strong demand.
