Agricultural prices increased 5.1% month on month in September, following August’s 4.0% rise.
In September, agricultural prices reached their highest average since April 2023, with five of the nine commodities tracked by our panel trading higher month on month. Grains and sugar drove the increase, with the supply outlook clouded by adverse weather conditions in key producing regions amid the El Niño climate phenomenon, as well as by intensifying attacks between Russia and Ukraine on each other’s export and logistics infrastructure. Meanwhile, the Iran energy crisis continued to bolster demand for biofuel, in turn supporting prices for corn, soybeans and sugar. For most other agricultural commodities, an improving supply outlook tempered prices.
