In August, rice prices held close toat July’s average and , below their past-five-year mean. Weaker-than-usual monsoon rains in India—which accounting for supplies roughly about 40% of world shipments—exacerbated supply fears and kept prices elevated amid supply fears, as did high energy and fertilizer costs amid the Iran war plus the looming impact of El Niño on Southeast Asian harvests.
