Diesel prices averaged USD 3.86 per gallon in April, up 2.0% from March. On 30 April, the commodity traded at USD 4.11 per gallon, down 0.7% from 31 March.
Despite easing, diesel’s average price premium over crude remained close to March’s 41-month high in April. Inventories remain low, forcing buyers to purchase supplies from refiners at a premium; the shares of top U.S. refiners such as Valero Energy and Marathon Petroleum have increased by more than 20% so far this year.
