Cotton prices averaged USD 66.81 cents per pound in March, up 7.1% from February. On 31 March, the commodity traded at USD 70.00 cents per pound, up 10.0% from 27 February.
In March, cotton prices spiked to a 14-month high. The increase was due to the conflict in the Middle East, which sparked sharp price increases for shipping, energy and insurance. Still, sluggish demand amid a shift toward petroleum-derived synthetic fibers kept prices below their prior five-year average.
