Cocoa prices averaged USD 5,987 per metric ton in August, up 6.7% from July. On 31 August, the commodity traded at USD 6,710 per metric ton, up 22.0% from 31 July.
In August, average cocoa prices rose for the fifth consecutive month and hit an 11-month high, supported by crop size and quality concerns amid the spread of black pod disease in West Africa. Prices were also boosted by the El Niño weather event, which is expected to curb production and sharply reduce the global supply surplus.
