Natural gas U.S. prices averaged USD 3.46 per MMBtu in May, up 1.3% from April. On 30 May, the commodity traded at USD 3.46 per MMBtu, up 3.3% from 30 April.
Prices broadly steadied in May after plummeting in April. Investor sentiment stabilized following the China-U.S. trade truce on 12 May, which came earlier than expected by the market. Moreover, on the supply side, U.S. production fell from a record 105.8 billion cubic feet in April to 105.0 in May. Still, the increase in prices was only slight; the U.S. power sector’s demand for gas fell 7% year on year in May as a result of a surge in renewables generation, cooler temperatures and a rise in coal-fired power.
