Natural gas U.S. prices averaged USD 4.14 per MMBtu in January, down 5.8% from December. On 30 January, the commodity traded at USD 4.42 per MMBtu, up 19.8% from 31 December.
U.S. natural gas prices whipsawed in January, increasing 48132% in the nine days to 28 January before nearly halving the following day. Extreme cold across much of the U.S. led Americans to switch on the heating, in turn raising demand for natural gas, and also disrupted output at several gas wells, hurting supply. However, temperatures then warmed, leading output to recover and heating demand to ease. Moreover, LNG exports from the eight largest U.S. plants fell from December’s record high in January.
