Indonesia: Merchandise exports growth loses steam in January
Latest reading: Merchandise exports rose 3.1% over the same month last year in January (December: +6.7% year-on-year). January’s outturn marked the slowest expansion since June 2024. Meanwhile, merchandise imports expanded just 0.2% over the same month last year in January (December: +11.2% yoy), marking the weakest result since May 2024.
The merchandise trade balance improved from the previous month, recording a USD 3.7 billion surplus in January (December 2024: USD 3.1 billion surplus; January 2024: USD 3.1 billion surplus). Lastly, the trend improved, with the 12-month trailing merchandise trade balance recording a USD 40.5 billion surplus in January, compared to the USD 39.9 billion surplus in December.
