Turkey: Current account surplus falls in September
Latest reading: The current account recorded a USD 3.0 billion surplus in September, deteriorating from the USD 4.9 billion surplus posted in August (September 2023: USD 2.8 billion surplus). Meanwhile, the 12-month trailing current account deficit improved, coming in at USD 9.7 billion in September (August: USD 9.8 billion deficit).
The merchandise trade balance worsened from the previous month, recording a USD 3.1 billion deficit in September (August 2024: USD 2.9 billion deficit). Merchandise exports were broadly stable falling just 0.2% annually in September, on the heels of August’s 2.8% increase. Meanwhile, merchandise imports fell 2.5% on an annual basis in September (August: -13.0% yoy), marking the strongest reading since April 2024.
